UNIC History

From Kyoei Kaihatsu to UNIC

FURUKAWA UNIC CORPORATION was originally Kyoei Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., which was established in 1946. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry instructed Kyoei Kaihatsu to work on farmland development and disaster recovery work to aid in rebuilding society after the devastation of World War II.
In 1961, Kyoei Kaihatsu launched the first truck-mounted crane in Japan and named it UNIC. In 1970, the company renamed also itself UNIC. This was the beginning of the post-war economic growth period, and the decision to change the name was to express the determination to pave the way for a new age.

UNIC Development History

In Pursuit of a Universal Crane

The name UNIC is a combination of "universal" and "crane." It is also intended to evoke the image of the legendary beast "unicorn,".
UNIC is a brand of universal cranes not only in Japan, but also the entire globe. Today, the name is widespread as a pronoun for mounted cranes that are appreciated by many users.

"Strength to create novel products from scratch through painstaking effort"
That is the passion and determination that FURUKAWA UNIC has for its work.

Launched the Model UNIC100 1-ton truck-mounted crane "Create from scratch with our own hands"
While observing truck-mounted cranes that loaded, unloaded, and transported cargo efficiently in Europe, FURUKAWA UNIC was convinced that such machines were crucial for the development of Japan and started to develop its own truck-mounted crane. After numerous trials and errors, we created something that did not exist in Japan. That is how the history of truck-mounted cranes began in Japan and that "manufacturer's spirit" has been passed down unbroken.

Launched the RC-30 wired remote control Loading and unloading operations were usually performed in pairs with a crane operator and a signaler. However, there were instances of a lifted load colliding with a signaler or the load getting damaged because they failed to accurately predict each other’s movements.
To solve this problem that customers were experiencing, UNIC introduced a remote control that could be used with one hand, enabling one-man operation.

1980
Launched the High Outrigger crane
1983
Developed the A.A. System, an operating mechanism that provides automatic accelerator control The speed of a conventional crane was adjusted by operating it with one hand while revving up the engine with the other. As such, in order to perform two different operations using two levers at the same time, you had to leave the throttle wide open., That led the crane to move always at top speed, which was very dangerous.

To solve this problem, UNIC developed an industry-leading innovative operating mechanism that provides automatic accelerator control linked to lever operations, thereby drastically increasing the convenience of cranes. This innovative invention known as the Automatic Accelerator Control System was inspired by nothing other than the mechanism of a traditional toy.
1985
Launched the Model RC-30R wireless radio remote control Inspired by radio-controlled model airplanes, we could realize to remotely operate a crane by a self-built toy. This led to the development of the first wireless remote control device for truck-mounted cranes in Japan, exponentially boosting the efficiency of operations.
This invention solved the three disadvantages of industrial wireless remote devices at that time, namely that they were large, heavy, and difficult to handle. Instead, we provided a lightweight and compact radio control system that contained significant countermeasures against radio interference.

2002
Launched U-can Series truck-mounted cranes with linked radio control systems As conventional hydraulic valves lacked flow control, for example, raising the boom and unwinding the hook at the same time, made it difficult to raise the boom due to the property of hydraulic oil. In pursuit of smoother crane operations, UNIC developed a new flow control system and hydraulic valve. The key to obtaining smoothness was the machining accuracy of the hydraulic valves. This was made possible with UNIC's traditional techniques used to manufacture high-performance components.
Launched JOY, a joystick-type radio control system Inspired by the joystick of a video game console, UNIC completed a joystick-type radio control system completely by itself, from design to manufacturing.
This product links the subtle movements of a joystick to the maneuvers of a crane precisely and smoothly, attracting an enduring popularity particularly among young operators for its intuitive, easy operability.

Launched the Model URW7035C 1-ton UNIC cube crane In Japanese urban areas, there is much demand for three-storied small houses. Many such houses are exclusively made of wood due to the lack of space to operate a rough terrain crane required for handling heavy materials, such as steel beams. To solve this problem for housing developers, UNIC developed a compact cube crane that can enter a small plot of land and still boasts sufficient crane performance. This product makes it possible to build steel-frame houses in small plots of land and contributes to reducing construction periods at the same time, which are one of the reasons for its popularity.
